Men charged in teen's death will remain in jail
A hearing on Tuesday assured that three men charged in connection with the shooting death Friday night of 13-year-old of Keyshawn Tyrell Gregory will stay in jail while their case progresses.
Posted — UpdatedMalik Armein Jones, 19, of 601 Peach Road in Raleigh, who is alleged to have pulled the trigger, faces a single charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Jones has one prior arrest in Wake County on a 2013 drug charge. He was a student at Broughton High School until January 2014, when he withdrew. Now he is being held without bail at the Wake County jail.
Both Jamal Christopher Howie, 19, and Jonathan Dejesus Chavez, 18, are charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
According to police, Gregory was in a car with some friends outside Howie's home Friday night when the people in the car exchanged words with some people on the street. Someone then fired shots into the car and hit Gregory, police said.
Public defender Charles Caldwell would not say whether or not gangs played a role in the killing, but says both the victim and the suspects were running with a rough crowd.
"We hate to see children being involved in situations that no one in our society should have to deal with," Caldwell said.
