Men charged in 2016 hit-and-run that killed 2 Harnett County teens

According to investigators, Jennafer Schark, 13, and Kyle Strait, 16, both of Broadway, and Steven Daniels, 14, of Sanford, were walking home from a gas station about a half-mile away from Strait’s home on Jan. 16, 2016, when they were hit on U.S. Highway 421.

Schark and Strait were both pronounced dead at the scene, and Daniels was critically injured.

Schark's sister, Jessyca, was with the group at the time of the crash and said that a white truck came up behind them and swerved off the road before striking the teens and speeding away. She also described the truck as having a loud exhaust pipe.

The driver of that truck, Davis Christian Stewart, 21, of Lillington, and passenger Donald Conrad Crounse, 20, of Raleigh, were each charged with two counts of hit and run causing death or serious bodily injury, one count of felony hit and run causing injury, altering and removing evidence, conspiracy to alter or remove evidence, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Crounse also faces a charge of conspiracy to commit felony hit and run.

Janice Schark, Jennafer's mother, said she will always re-live that January night.

"They took a piece of me," she said. “They destroyed two families and nothing is ever going to be the same, never going to be the same.”

"That was the hardest day of my life that night, and I keep seeing it in my head. That doesn't make it any easier."

She gives investigators on the case all the credit, and she said she wants the story to end with some justice.

“They may not have seen those kids faces, but they will see mine,” she said.

According to Sgt. Michael Baker with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Crounse was in custody at the Harnett County Sheriff's Office and Stewart was in California, awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
