BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Durham medical worker was killed in an apparent murder-suicide at her Burlington home on Friday night.

Police said Leonard Woodies, 45, shot Dorothy Shiner Phillips, 49, with a single-barrel shotgun while she was on the porch of their Arden Street home. Woodies then turned the gun on himself.

Phillips died a short time after the shooting, police said.

Hospital officials said Phillips worked full-time as a phlebotomist at Duke University Hospital Health System Clinical Laboratory at the Durham Regional Medical Center and also part-time at the UNC clinical laboratory.

Investigators said the couple was unmarried but lived together at that address. Police said they had not received complaints about domestic violence at that house before.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call Burlington police at 336-229-3500.
