— Fayetteville police on Friday said that a medical examiner has positively identified the remains found off Gregory Street as those of Denika Lashalle Jones, a 26-year-old woman who went missing May 15.

Police searched for Jones for more than a week after finding her boyfriend dead inside the home that they shared on Gardenia Avenue.

Tommy Loren Webb, 35, had been shot several times, police said, and Jones' cellphone and personal belongings were left inside the home. Jose Reyes found Jones' remains Wednesday while walking through the woods off Gregory Street.

Frederick Smith, Jones' father, said on Thursday that her death was a huge blow to the family.

Investigators haven't made any arrests in the case, but said they have interviewed several persons of interest.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Fayetteville police at 910-433-1421 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

To the person that put she is better off dead, How would you feel if someone said that about your mother, daughter, sister or aunt? May God have mercy on your soul for that very insentive remark. Since when did better off dead beat being alive with your family?

The guy they arrested is in Federal custody on Probation violations. Wonder what judge let him out with a plea deal?

There's been an arrest. Stay tuned.

"...Its sad to say, but this girl is probably better off gone...."

    La Mangosta Negra

    Why would you say that?

  • ajscratch71 May 25, 2012

Seriously? Race isn't a factor? Just read some posts on WRAL.

Posters were overwhelmingly sympathetic to the murdered white woman whose body was found in her husband's pickup truck. Not one racial comment that I remember(didn't read them all).
Contrast that with the following statements regarding the death of this black woman: "does anyone really care"(that's sarcasm?), "Its sad to say, but this girl is probably better off gone".
    1. Yes, her family, friends and others care.
    2. How do you know that she's better off gone? Is it because she's black? Did you know her? Do you feel the white woman found dead in her husband's pick up truck is "better off gone"? Please expound.

Subtle racism is just as bad as overt racism. The difference is that subtlety is for cowards and cowards hide. Seems like some white folks want blacks to forget that racial injustice ever happened in the U.S. but at the same time still celebrate their Confederate heritage.

Race has nothing to do with the comments. Its sad to say, but this girl is probably better off gone. No one is making negative comments on the Germans apologizing for experimenting on humans. In fact people are still angry about what happened to their relatives.

how come someone can write this but if you try to respond to it nothing is posted? Seems black folks are allowed to rationalize themselves as victims of racial injustice. But no one is allowed to say anything that invalidates that way of thinking. Especially if there is some well deserved sarcasm.

amen to that one.......won't pot this either.

I hate to burst your bubble leekinked, but movetomaui is exactly right. Look at how many comments the missing white female soldier from Ft. Bragg's story got, and compare that to the number of comments this woman is getting. They still haven't even found the woman from Ft. Bragg, yet the stories on her have gotten hundreds of comments. Movetomaui is 100% correct, whether you can accept that or not.

This is a holidiay weekend. Many people have holiday/family/friends plans -- anything other than sitting here
commenting on news stories. Maybe not me, but normal people. ;) I'm having lunch at my desk because everybody else is gone. :*(

i am so SICK of hearing about race being an automatic factor in the media/public if the vic/perp are black...if the other person involved even LOOKS white, they are automatically labeled as a racist, no matter the circumstances...so let me ask you people, if you look at someone and assess them to be a racist bc of the color of their skin--what does that make you?

  • erderr4533 May 25, 2012

@solarflare: i'm sorry but, did we forget the whole george zimmerman thing so quickly? no, it's impossible to forget that fiasco bc they are STILL talking about it...now tell me if anyone would've said a single word about race if it'd been a white kid and a black guy that shot him? no, it would've automatically been chocked up to anything else (such as drugs, gangs, initiations, blahblahblah)and the commenters on here would've instantly started figuring out ways to make it the vics fault as well, and NO ONE would've blamed it on race, but thats the first place the public went w/ the zimmerman thing...so how about you quit acting like people only care about white people bc i'm pretty sure thats ridiculous to even consider at this pt.
