McCrory's budget: No more money for politics
The governor's budget would eliminate funding for public campaign finance programs and eliminate "checkoff" funding that goes to political parties.

First, it would end publicly funded campaign finance programs for appellate court and state Supreme Court races. McCrory anticipates eliminating those programs entirely, returning any leftover money to other government uses. That would save the state $4.1 million in the next fiscal year.
He also repeals the political parties financing fund. That money is provided when taxpayers check a box at the top of their tax returns that they would like money to go to support the Republican or Democratic party. That would save the state roughly $1.1 million in the coming fiscal year.
"This eliminates public money, tax money, for both parties," said Budget Director Art Pope.
