Shanahan, a former federal prosecutor, four-term Raleigh councilman and lawyer in private practice, left the post last week after just six months on the job. He cited his business interests and his wife’s military career as reasons.
Frank L. Perry, currently the commissioner of the Division of Law Enforcement, will step up to the secretary position on an interim basis, McCrory's office said.
The governor also named Jeff Epstein, chief operating officer for the Department of Revenue, to step into his boss's shoes when Secretary Lyons Gray takes a medical leave.
