Mayors rally support for Raleigh roads bond
Mayor Nancy McFarlane was joined by three of her predecessors Monday to press for passage of Raleigh's $75 million transportation bond next month.
Posted — UpdatedThe bond, which would pay to widen 14 roads across Raleigh and other projects, is on the Oct. 8 ballot for city voters.
Business leaders and former mayors Charles Meeker, Smedes York and Tom Bradshaw joined McFarlane in saying that the projects are needed to keep up with Raleigh's growth.
"We've got to keep getting better," York said. "There are a lot of missing links. The streets are there in most of these cases, but they need upgrading. It's just not like Raleigh to drive over some of these streets."
If the bond is approved, paying for it would add 1 cent to Raleigh's property tax rate, meaning the owner of a $150,000 home would pay an extra $15 a year.
The Wake County Republican Party is lobbying against the bond, saying they would support a smaller measure that wouldn't require any tax increase.
