MAUI, HI — One Maui Fisherman has a whale - actually it's a shark of a tale to tell.

Nick Wakida - has a passion for kayak fishing and it NEARLY came back to bite him.

"Out of the corner of my eye I could see an object just kind of racing up towards me and by the time i saw it, it was pretty close already." Wakida said.

"IT" was a 5-foot long Galapagos shark (as best as Wakida could tell).

"I just ducked and prepared for impact." he said.

Wakida was at Makena Landing - a hot spot for fishermen on Maui. He never dreamed that he would become the bait.

"I've never had 'em come up and whack the boat, and this one came straight down too. It wasn't at the surface of the water. It was from down below. Maybe following my jig or something."

The Haiku, Maui resident says he was using a plastic lure and had no chum in the water, he was surprised the shark paid any attention at all. A kayak fisherman for 2-years, Wakida says he paddled quickly to find his friends that had ventured ahead of him.

"After that I was super cautious of what's around me and swimming around me." Wakida says.

But fear of ANOTHER shark attack - might be the least of his worries.

"Oh, my wife doesn't know yet. She might find out." Wakida hesitantly laughed as he the reality of telling her sets in.

"Those are the type of stories you only share with certain people. "
