Masked, armed man arrested at State Capitol

Posted August 1, 2015

— A masked, armed man carrying a backpack full of spray paint was arrested at the State Capitol early Saturday, state authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety said State Capitol Police officers saw the man wearing a full face mask, gloves, heavy clothing and the backpack shortly before 5 a.m.

Perren Tremayne Moss, 32, was taken into custody and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon on State Capitol grounds and wearing a mask on public property.

Authorities said Moss had a concealed .38-caliber handgun and his backpack had cans of spray paint. No state property was damaged.

Moss was held at the Wake County Detention Center in lieu of $1,000 bond.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

Regarding the "wearing a mask on public property", that is indeed a NC General Statute. Here it is for your reference:

I'll venture to guess that this law was put into place because of the KKK, because note that they also include "hood" and "to conceal identity" as elements of the statute. What makes me laugh is that a black person gets nailed with a law that appeared to have been targeting white supremacist groups. Of course, I'm only speculating about the origins, but nothing else seems to make sense as to why that dumb law exists.

Indeed. I about died laughing when I heard all of that on the news. I give him an "A" for creativity in his response.

According to another news outlet, his brother says "he was just out walking...he couldn't sleep" and the gun "belonged to another family member" and the best one, when asked about the spray paint he said his brother "liked to paint with friends as a hobby". You just can't fix stupid.

I'm more concerned that it's illegal to wear a mask on public property.
