ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The Nash County Sheriff's Office says a body pulled from the Tar River near Rocky Mount early Thursday afternoon is that of a man from Upper Marlboro, Md.

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper driving along Interstate 95 near N.C. Highway 97 around 2:45 a.m. spotted a black 2006 Hyundai sedan that he initially thought had been abandoned, 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon with the Highway Patrol said.

When the trooper approached the car, he discovered the keys were in the ignition and the car was still running.

It's unclear how long the car had been on the side of the road.

Nash Sheriff Richard Jenkins said divers recovered the remains of Cameron Edward Jones, 25, shortly after noon about 20 yards from the car.

Authorities are not investigating the death as a homicide, Jenkins said, although he could not say how Jones might have died.

Investigators initially said Jones had been reported missing but later said he was last seen by his family around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
