Raleigh, N.C. — Mary Watson Nooe, who served four terms on the Raleigh City Council from 1987 to 1995, died on Sunday, the city announced Monday. She was 67.
Nooe represented District B from 1987 to 1991 and served at large during her last term in office. Nooe made an unsuccessful bid for Raleigh mayor in 1995.
"I always appreciated her understanding of and commitment to finding solutions for a variety of community issues and concerns," Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane said. "I join friends and colleagues in offering my deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Ms. Nooe will be missed and I ask that the community keep her family in their thoughts and prayers.”
Nooe, a Pittsboro native who came to Raleigh to attend Meredith College, was the city's first employee to work on a recycling program for Raleigh. Nooe served on the city's Human Relations and Human Resources Commission before being elected to the city council, and after she left office, served on the city’s original Stormwater Advisory Commission from 2004 to 2009.
The Nooe family is being served by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s Street, Raleigh.
