— Spokeswoman Kim Genardo confirmed Wednesday that Rick Martinez will join Gov. Pat McCrory's press office.

Martinez is Curtis Media Group's longtime news director for WPTF-AM and the North Carolina News Network. He's also a conservative columnist for The News & Observer newspaper.

Genardo says Martinez will begin his new job April 23. He will give up his seat on UNC-TV's Board of Trustees.

Martinez is McCrory's second local media hire. Genardo was the first, moving quickly from reporting on the governor at NBC-17 to a job as his spokeswoman.

Wednesday afternoon, even after the news of his hire was first leaked, Martinez was still reporting for Curtis on legislative education reform efforts.

His wife, Donna Martinez, is a conservative commentator who hosts a weekday morning show on WPTF. No word yet on whether that will continue.
