Marshals apprehend suspect in fatal Hope Mills chase

Police also released more details of the officer-involved shooting.

Detective Jacob Pfeffer tried to pull over a 1993 Lincoln Town Car as part of a drug investigation, but the driver refused to stop, and a chase ensued, police said. Officer Matt Norris joined in the pursuit, which moved from Crystal Springs Road to Snow Hill Road and then through a mobile home park.

Near the intersection of National Avenue and Snow Hill Road, the Lincoln tried to ram Pfeffer's unmarked car, but he was able to move out of the Lincoln's path and avoid serious damage, police said. The Lincoln then slammed into Norris' patrol car, disabling both vehicles and leaving Norris unconscious.

Pfeffer approached the Lincoln and ordered the driver not to move, but the man lunged at him, police said. Pfeffer shot the driver and took him into custody and then provided first aid to Norris until paramedics arrived.

Kevin Dejon Grissett, 25, was wounded in the shooting and later died. Police said a .40-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.

Police said Ryan Marchon Bingham, 24, was a passenger in the Lincoln and fled the scene on foot before Grissett rammed the police cars. No details about his arrest were released.

Pfeffer and Norris remain on administrative leave pending a State Bureau of Investigation review of the incident.
