BugFest, the annual N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences event that draws many thousands to downtown Raleigh, is nearly here.

This is a big event that's become an annual tradition for many families. It's 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. BugFest is immediately followed by an Evening Insectival from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., which is great for all ages, but might be particularly fun for families with tweens and teens. There will be bands, a street carnival and a nocturnal bug tour.

The main festival features all sorts of information, demonstrations, displays and activities about bugs of all kinds inside the museum and outside. They include the Cafe Insecta where visitors are invited to taste dishes created by local chefs that include bugs.

This is a free, fun event. My recommendation: Get there early to beat the crowds.
