The Durham Symphony Orchestra will open its 2016-17 with a Halloween concert.

The third annual Halloween Spooktacular is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Oct. 23, outside on the plaza at Northgate Mall in Durham. It's free and open to the public.

The Halloween-inspired musical offerings include John Williams’ Star Wars suites; Bernard Hermann’s theme from Psycho; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise; March to the Scaffold by Hector Berlioz; and a Muppets Medley, among others.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention, creator of giant puppets, masks and shadow plays, joins the orchestra in staged performances. There also will be a costume contest, food trucks and more. If it's rainy, the performance will move inside Northgate's Center Court.
