Marines, sailor injured in pre-deployment training

Fifteen Marines and one Sailor were injured Friday night in a single assault amphibious vehicle accident at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Fifteen Marines and one sailor were injured Friday night in a single assault amphibious vehicle accident at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. during a pre-deployment training exercise conducted by the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, officials said.

The injured Marines and sailor were taken to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and New Hanover Hospital for treatment and were released. Three Marines remained in the hospital Saturday pending further evaluation.

No civilians were involved in the incident.

The Marines and Sailor injured were all assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The incident remains under investigation.
