Marines returning from Afghanistan stuck at RDU

Posted January 29, 2014

Nearly 300 Marines returning to North Carolina from Afghanistan were stuck at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Wednesday night due to slick roads.

The troops, on their way to Cherry Point Marine Corp Air Station, will spend Wednesday night in the Triangle and will be cared for by staff and volunteers of the USO of North Carolina.

“The USO of NC is proud of our tradition to be with our troops every step of the way, even in winter storms,” says John Falkenbury, president of the organization. “It is our mission and an honor to provide for these troops who have given so much in service to our country.”

The Marines are planning to head to Cherry Point on Thursday.

Praise God they are safe here. Bless their hearts BIG as well as the hearts of all those who love them and those of the USO who helped them while stranded.

We can win wars, but not drive through snow or ice?

Glad they are back state side. Sort of wonder why they did not land at MCAS Cherry Point vs. RDU

Glad they had a warm place to stay, even if it was the airport. Welcome home!!

I know it's better than where they were, but to be so close to home and have to wait one more day to see loved ones must be tough! Been there before! Semper Fi brothers!

Yeah, compared to Afganistan I'm sure spending the night @ RDU is fun times! Were the bars open I hope?

Trust me. It's better than sitting on the ramp in Kandahar or Bagram.

Man, I would have been glad to take a bunch of them out for dinner/drinks...roads were fine. Welcome home.
