Marbles Kids Museum is extending its all day Monday hours beyond summer vacation.

From now on, the downtown Raleigh museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays (and every other day of the week), regardless of whether school is in session or there is a school holiday.

Mondays at Marbles have been in flux over the years. For many years, the museum was closed on Mondays except on school holidays. Three years ago, it expanded hours to 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays, except on school holidays when the museum was open all day. But those hours were confusing to Marbles-goers.

"We would often see families show up in the afternoon and leave disappointed," Marbles' Katy Hipp Burgwyn tells me.

This summer, the summer hours were expanded again to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays, with no field trip groups. The Monday, field trip free hours have been a hit.

"Our members and guests have responded well, and attendance has been strong," Burgwyn tells me. "There’s great demand, too, for a day free of outside field trips (area day camps in the summer, school field trips during the school year), and Mondays offer that day at the museum without field trip groups."

Marbles' summer camps will still have access to the museum on Mondays. Groups also can still book field trips to IMAX educational movies on Mondays.
