ENFIELD, N.C. — The Halifax County Sheriff's Office was searching Monday evening for an alleged car thief after the stolen car broke down and was abandoned off Interstate 95 near Enfield.

Maj. Bruce Temple said the man stole a car in Vance County and may have tried to steal another car in the Beaver Dam Road area.

He said residents in the area on both sides of I-95 should be extra cautious.

The suspect is white, stands about 6 feet tall with a slender build, has shoulder-length hair and facial hair and was wearing dark clothes. Neither Halifax County nor Vance County authorities have identified the man.

He is not believed to be armed, Temple said.

The state Highway Patrol is assisting in the search.
