SALISBURY, N.C. — State Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies were searching early Monday for a 27-year-old man who escaped from Piedmont Correctional Institution, a prison in Salisbury.

Jonathan Dixon, who is serving a maximum of seven years for multiple counts of breaking and entering and other charges, was a minimum-custody inmate at the facility, officials said. Prison staff discovered that he was missing at about 4 a.m.

Dixon has family living in and near Pitt County and may be traveling to that area. He was due to be released in June 2017.
