Man with propane tank arrested after standoff
A man fleeing a Thursday morning confrontation with a Cumberland County deputy grabbed a propane tank and barricaded himself inside his father's home, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedThe incident began when a deputy responded to a report of a home south of Fayetteville that was being burglarized. The deputy found a man trying to break into the house with a crowbar, authorities said.
The man pulled a knife on the deputy, who unsuccessfully tried to stun him with his Taser, authorities said. The man then fled on foot to his father's house and barricaded himself inside, authorities said.
Somewhere along the way, the man grabbed a propane tank, and authorities said the tank could explode if mishandled.
No one else was inside the home, and the man's father worked with deputies to convince his son to come out, authorities said.
Deputies eventually stunned the man with a "bean bag" gun and took him into custody.
Alejandro Villalongo-Serrano, 33, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for evaluation, authorities said. He has a history of emotional problems, authorities said.
The deputy was uninjured in the incident.
No charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
