— Clayton police said that a 22-year-old man wanted on charges of raping and giving drugs to a 14-year-old girl was arrested late Tuesday.

Juan Antonio Batiste, 22, of 515 Park Drive, faces felony charges of statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child. He was placed in the Johnston County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond.

Investigators said that Batiste and Jamelle Monque Best, 39, gave drugs to a 14-year-old girl they met through friends and then had sex with her in Best's apartment. Police said they also found two handguns and a small amount of drugs in his apartment.

Authorities said they opened an investigation after the girl's parents learned of the abuse and took her to a local hospital.

Best was also in jail under a $352,000 secured bond.

The two suspects both have criminal pasts, according to state Department of Correction records.

DOC records show that Batiste was on probation for a January conviction for assault on a female. He has previous convictions for communicating threats, simple assault and drug charges, as well.

Best has been convicted of selling drugs in Wayne and Carteret counties and assault by pointing a gun, according to records.

jannieboo66, If something is seriously wrong with NC please feel free to go back where you came from! This goes on everywhere unfortunately. But that is just a ignorant comment.

Just looking at them gives me the creeps! Why would anyone want to befriend them. Especially a female! Nothing about them screams I'm the type of guy that you can depend on.

"... At 14 I knew where mine was every second."

Were you a stay at home mom who was homeschooling your child?

  • itsmyownopinion Jun 24, 2010

"...That's probably because the big crime are happening in other states."

When your 14 year old is drugged and raped, please get back to us and tell us what "the big crime" is.

jannieboo66, I hate to break the news to you but it's what the news wants you to know, NC doesn't have more rapes, etc, the media is just focusing on it more here. That's probably because the big crime are happening in other states.

Peppercorns this is a new day and time honey. These kids run the parents. Maybe if the law will stop giving kids so many rights, parents would do better. If I hear one more person in public telling another parent about someone calling police. Because this parent disciplines their child/children, I am gonna scream. See.....that is the problem right there. Discipline is good, abuse is wrong..........spare the rod, spoil the child.

In the 3 months I have been here, I have heard of nothing but rapes, indecent exposure and child molestation. Something is seriously wrong with NC. I know these things go on everywhere. To hear it every other day is ridiculous. Instead of spending time arguing over sweepstakes. They need to come up with some solutions on reducing these crimes and stricter laws on the pervs, uggggggggggggggg.

I hope he gets a really mean cell mate in jail. :) but I must ask......Just where were this girls parents and what were they doing besides keeping a tight reign, (ha ha) on their 14 year old daughter. At 14 I knew where mine was every second

Obviously you were a stay at home parent, I don't know how you REALLY knew where your 14 year old was every second, that's impossible. I had to work, so I didn't have the luxury of staying at home but my daughters were raised with strict moral code. These guys should be thrown in prison for along time but I am tired of everyone blaming parents or someone else for bad people

peppercorns, if you knew where she was every second that means she knew where you were every second. She could have been doing whatever she wanted.
