SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 22-year-old Pennsylvania man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer late Tuesday after leading authorities on a brief chase through parts of Johnston County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the chase began in Selma and continued on Interstate 95 in Smithfield after authorities attempted to pull over a red pickup truck driven by Mark Malloy, of Shavertown, Pa.

Malloy stopped on I-95, jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the southbound shoulder into northbound traffic, where he was struck by a tractor-trailer, troopers said. Malloy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer that hit Malloy, 45-year-old Antonio Oliveras, was not hurt. No charges will be filed in the incident.

Troopers said it's unclear why Malloy fled police.
