Man struck, killed by tractor-trailer after leading Johnston authorities on brief chase
A 22-year-old Pennsylvania man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer late Tuesday after leading authorities on a brief chase through parts of Johnston County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Posted — UpdatedTroopers said the chase began in Selma and continued on Interstate 95 in Smithfield after authorities attempted to pull over a red pickup truck driven by Mark Malloy, of Shavertown, Pa.
Malloy stopped on I-95, jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the southbound shoulder into northbound traffic, where he was struck by a tractor-trailer, troopers said. Malloy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer that hit Malloy, 45-year-old Antonio Oliveras, was not hurt. No charges will be filed in the incident.
Troopers said it's unclear why Malloy fled police.
