Man sought in Fayetteville shooting, robbery caught in NJ

Members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force apprehended Darnell Ray Lewis Jr. in Irvington, N.J., on Monday. He is in jail awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

Fayetteville police were called to 5520 Raeford Road on Nov. 23 to investigate an incident where an armed man put a gun to the head of someone and demanded money. The victim fled, and the gunman fired several shots, hitting an SUV parked nearby, police said.

Three people in the SUV weren't injured. The robbery victim wasn't injured either, police said.

The gunman then stole the victim's car, and it was found three days later at a Target store on Skibo Road.

Police said they believe a second person conspired with Lewis to commit the crimes.

Lewis is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle and two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.

New Jersey authorities also charged Lewis in connection with a handgun found when he was arrested, police said. Authorities are investigating whether Lewis is linked to other crimes in New Jersey, and he also faces robbery and attempted murder charges in Pennsylvania, police said.
