Man sought after 13-year-old shot

Posted February 19, 2010

— Rocky Mount police are looking for a man wanted on charges of possession of a stolen firearm after, they say, a 13-year-old boy was accidentally shot Thursday evening.

Police said that Trae Hakeem Crandell, 18, was handling a stolen firearm in a residence at 1108 Delphia Drive shortly before 8 p.m., when the gun went off, striking the teen.

The boy was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was listed in stable condition Friday. Police didn't release his name, but said he does not live where the shooting occurred.

Crandell remained at large Friday.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Rocky Mount police at 252-972-1411 or Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.

    "...when the gun went off,..."

Note to WRAL: Guns don't "go off". They are fired. Period.

Believe me, Rocky Mount does have the problem it appears to have. The number of stories have been less lately than there had been in past weeks. I don't know exactly why they stopped, but sign up for the e-mail crime reports for Rocky Mount and you will see that only the WRAL reports have been less. I am not happy about the cities image, but not reporting crime does not solve the problem. Crime is the problem, not how much or often it gets reported.

If other agencies in the state reported events the way RM does, you would think that every city is as bad. RM is transparent in their reporting and of course, crime equals NEWS to wral. Instead of saying how bad RM is, maybe you should ask your local law enforcement agencies why they don't share information the way RM does. Chances are, they are hiding the stats out of fear of tarnishing their cities image. Kudos to RM for being transparent and keeping it real.

Rocky Mount again in the news for crime. Seem to me there needs to be a claring out of the LE office there that perhaps are padding their pockets in covering for those criminals and letting them continue to walk the streets. I say start over to get rid of the corrupt one and put LE officers there who do care and that will clean up all this mess there.
