FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville man wanted in connection with the beating and kidnapping of his girlfriend was arrested Monday when he showed up in court on a traffic offense, authorities said.

Winston Woodrow French Jr., 36, of 2550 Cumberland Creek Drive, is accused of punching the woman in the face, kicking her in the rib cage and choking her by grabbing her neck, pulling her in to his vehicle outside her aunt's home on Friday, authorities said. She told investigators he pulled out a pocket knife and put it to her neck, demanding that she stop screaming or he would slit her throat.

The woman managed to escape from the vehicle as French began to drive out of the apartment complex parking lot, authorities said.
