GREENSBORO, N.C. — Authorities say one man has been shot to death in the parking lot of a North Carolina mall.

Greensboro Police said in a news release that officers found the man, identified as Westley Tyler Tugman, 33, of Lenoir, after responding to a call reporting gunshots around 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Four Seasons Town Centre.

Authorities said that Tugman was confronted by the suspect in the parking lot of the mall in what appeared to be an attempted robbery. The suspect fired the gun and fled the scene.

Authorities say the shooting happened outside J.C. Penney. The mall remained open.

Tugman was taken to a local hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Police say they haven't arrested anyone and descriptions of the suspect vary. Investigators say it appears Tugman wasn't targeted at random.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the scene.
