— A 23-year-old man who was shot multiple times Tuesday night in what investigators believe was an attempted robbery died early Wednesday, Fayetteville police said.

Tyrone Alonzo Shepard was walking to his home on Callahan Circle at about 9 p.m. when two men exited a vehicle and attempted to rob him, police said.

Shepard was shot after he resisted the two men.

"The suspects returned to the vehicle and fled the area  while the victim was left in a critical state in the middle of the roadway," police said in a statement.

Shepard was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died.

No arrests have been made, and investigators have not released any detailed suspect information.
