DURHAM, N.C. — Police were investigating a fatal shooting Monday afternoon outside a Durham convenience store.

Officers dispatched to a shooting call at 12:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Chapel Hill Street found Raiford Matthews Jr. lying in the parking lot of University Market. Matthews, 34, of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ali Alsaras, the convenience store's owner, said he heard five shots coming from the side parking lot and then saw a man stumble into the front lot and collapse. Neither he nor any of the several customers inside at the time was hurt.

"Everybody started running" when the shots rang out, said Javon Carrington, who works nearby. "Everybody was ducking for cover."

No charges have been filed, and no further details were available.

University Market is a few blocks from the Duke University campus, and school administrators issued an alert to students and staff after the shooting. Immaculata Catholic School, which also is near the convenience store, briefly was locked down.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Durham police Investigator E. Ortiz at 919-560-4440, extension 29337, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
