Man reportedly robbed while playing basketball

Posted July 20, 2009

— A Rocky Mount man told police he was playing basketball in a park Sunday afternoon when four men carrying handguns robbed him.

Police said Monday that Donald Jones was at 517 Ravenwood Drive when four unidentified men approached him around 2:30 p.m. Two of the men brandished handguns and took Jones' cell phone.

They then fled on foot toward the 500 block of Starlingway Drive, police said. Officers searched the area but didn't find any suspects.

Descriptions of the robbers were not available.

Wow...they robbed him for a cellphone? How cheap are these things nowadays? I think these "men" need to find something to do with their lives. We need more soldiers, they should be made to enlist.

Rocky Mount in the news twice in one day. But I cant understand why. We have a great Police Chief, Great Asst. City Manager and A new Mayor. Yea right! If you are going to clean Rocky Mount up and make changes then start with the Police Department, City Hall and the Mayors Office.

oldb77, your last paragraph is the key to all of the stories. They recognize a serious problem in Rocky Mount. And addressing and publicizing the problems usually makes people open their eyes a little more. I'm sure Rocky Mount is only as bad as the parts of town you visit.

Does WRAL go through a crime report of RM and pick certain ones to write a story about. It seems like it. I know that RM is the armpit of eastern NC but people also get shot, robbed and assaulted everyday in the triangle too. You seem to be targeting RM. This story would have never made the headlines if it happened in the triangle. We don't need you to run a nit picky story everyday to tell us RM is a horrible place to live.

But maybe with all these stories on RM someone will take notice and see this town needs some real outside help. Get rid of these idiots governing RM, thats a huge start.
