Man pleads guilty to counterfeiting
A Raleigh man pleaded guilty Monday to participating in a counterfeiting ring, federal authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedRene Amador Castillo, 59, pleaded guilty to conspiring to pass and utter counterfeit obligations of the United States. He will be sentenced later, when he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Investigators with the Secret Service said Castillo and others traveled around the region between July 19 and Aug. 13, using counterfeit money to make various purchases.
On July 19, for example, Castillo and others went to a Walmart store, made separate purchases and paid for each with a bogus $100 bill. They did the same at a Food Lion supermarket the same day, authorities said.
Between Aug. 7 and Aug. 13, Castillo passed counterfeit currency at a Lowe's Home Improvement Center and a Home Depot, both in Apex, a Best Buy in Raleigh and a Rite Aid in Rolesville, authorities said.
