CLINTON, N.C. — A Sampson County man has pleaded guilty to assaulting the minister of a Harrells church last fall during a church celebration, authorities said Wednesday.

William Henry Carr Jr., 25, of Rose Hill, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 23 to 27 months in prison.

The Rev. Willie James Jr., pastor of St. James Disciples of Christ Church on Delway Highway, was preparing food for a cookout at the church on Sept. 19 when someone told him a man was slashing the tires of vehicles in the church parking lot, authorities said.

When James approached Carr to ask him to stop vandalizing the cars, Carr slashed James across the chest with a knife, authorities said.
