BANKS, OR — A 45-year-old man and his parakeet were involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 26 near Banks Saturday night.

Banks Fire District says they were called out to the crash at milepost 52 just before 5:30 p.m.

According to Banks Fire Dist., the man was driving a Chevy SUV eastbound when he drifted off the right shoulder causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV rolled over multiple times, crossing over into the westbound lane and coming to a rest on the shoulder.

A female passerby, who happened to be an employee at a Portland veterinarian clinic, heard the man voicing concern over his parakeet that was traveling with him.

The parakeet was found still in its cage. The vet worker took the bird in for an evaluation and will be keeping the bird until the owner can reclaim him.

The driver was taken to Emanuel Hospital and he is said to be in stable condition.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Drivers should expect some delays on Highway 26 near milepost 52.
