ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids man fled from a court appearance in Halifax County Tuesday and led sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase before he was re-arrested.

Witnesses said when Zackrious Lee, 29, was ordered into custody on a robbery charge, he ran to his vehicle instead.

Law enforcement officers chased Lee on U.S. Highway 301 into Northampton County. They stopped him after he ran over stop sticks and lost the use of his left rear tire.

Deputies charged Lee with simple assault, resisting a public officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger and speeding.

He was taken to Halifax County Jail where he was held without bond.
