— A 79-year-old man died early Wednesday when the car he was driving hit the back of a school bus on U.S. Highway 301 in Wilson County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Five students aboard the bus, which was headed to Hunt High School, were taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries. Twelve students were on the bus at the time.

According to troopers, the wreck happened at about 6:30 a.m. near Bass Road, about one mile north of Lucama, shortly after the bus had stopped to pick up a student. When the student sat down and began moving, it was hit by a 1992 Buick driven by James Earl Cockrell, of Lucama.

Cockrell was the only occupant in the Buick, authorities said.
