CLAYTON, N.C. — An accident in the construction zone around the Clayton Bypass left one man dead Tuesday, authorities said.

At around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said a soil-stabilizer mixer driven by Mark Zurcher, 36, of Tennessee, ran off the side of Ranch Road. The mixer rolled down the embankment, killing Zurcher.

Zurcher worked for Pozzolanic Contracting and Supply, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based road construction firm, authorities said.

The accident occurred in the work zone for the U.S. Highway 70 bypass near Clayton. Charges will not be filed in the accident.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office, the state Department of Labor, the state Department of Transportation, the state Division of Motor Vehicles and ST Wooten, the contractor for the bypass project, investigated the incident.
