— An accident in the construction zone around the Clayton Bypass left one man dead Tuesday, authorities said.

At around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said a soil-stabilizer mixer driven by Mark Zurcher, 36, of Tennessee, ran off the side of Ranch Road. The mixer rolled down the embankment, killing Zurcher.

Zurcher worked for Pozzolanic Contracting and Supply, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based road construction firm, authorities said.

The accident occurred in the work zone for the U.S. Highway 70 bypass near Clayton. Charges will not be filed in the accident.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office, the state Department of Labor, the state Department of Transportation, the state Division of Motor Vehicles and ST Wooten, the contractor for the bypass project, investigated the incident.

I saw this story while doing a search on this accident. We are friends of Mark's family and have been trying to find any information we can on the accident. Please continue to pray for the family. He leave's behind a young daughter (Jordan) who thought the world of him.
Mark was a loving dad, son and brother. Our hearts and prayers go out to his parents and daughter.

My condolences to the family. I am glad to hear this was not caused my passing motorists. I drive thru this construction area everyday during my commute. I believe it is the only construction zone in the state that does not have huge delays. Everyone for the most part slows down and shows patience.
When is the bypass slated to be complete? I will be happy not to go thru clayton (the town of a million traffic lights).

    How is this accident sinceless?

  • My Humble Opinion Jun 27, 2007

This is indeed a terrible tragedy. My uncle that worked for NC Department of Transportation was killed on the job last November while working on a bridge crew out from Clinton. This accident was never broadcast on the news even after MANY stations were contacted including this one. I wonder why some of these accidents make the news and some don't. I hope this man's family receives more support from his employer than my uncle's three children have from the State of North Carolina.

Sorry about the man loosing his life. I came by there today but didn't know what was going on. Only had a couple fire trucks left. I ride to and fro there every day and I sure hope that they take those bumps out at the new bridge. I'm waiting to see if it is resurfaced to get it smothered out. Again I am sorry for this man and may God's arms reach around your family in this time of sorrow.
