Man killed in Rocky Mount trench collapse

A man was killed Monday when the walls of a trench collapsed on him in Rocky Mount.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A man was killed Monday when the walls of a trench collapsed on him in Rocky Mount.

Edward Patrick Webb, 36, of Edgecombe County, was installing an overflow pipe at a new pond site along Red Barn Lane when the cave-in occurred at about 11:45 a.m., the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded to the scene, as did the West Edgecombe Fire Department, the Edgecombe County Rescue Squad, Edgecombe County Emergency Services, Nash County Emergency Services, the Nashville Fire Department and Coopers Fire Department.

Webb was pronounced dead at the scene.
