Posted — UpdatedAuthorities said Justin Alwayn Henley was operating a 2002 Honda motorcycle traveling east on Old Wake Forest Road between Capital Boulevard and Town Center Drive when he lost control.
Police said Henley crossed the center lane and struck a 2011 Ford sedan traveling westbound, driven by 70-year-old Michael James McAuliffe.
Henley was taken to WakeMed, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Henley's father, Steve Henley, is the executive director of The Junior Hurricanes, and the community has banded together to support the family following the crash.
"They hockey family has always been a community that supports one another, one that transcends the logo on a jersey or on the surface where the teams skate. Never is this more evident than when there are tragic circumstances," said a statement from the team and the Carolinas Hockey Community. "This generosity and support was not unexpected or unusual, and it is certainly appropriate. Hopefully we will be able to find a way to have Justin's relentless spirit and passion for the game live on here in the Triangle forever."
McAuliffe was not injured in the crash and no charges are expected to be filed in the incident.
