— A Warrenton man died Wednesday evening when his car slammed into a tree near Norlina and caught fire, authorities said.

Cary Alonzo Greene, 23, was southbound on U.S. Highway 1 near the intersection of Weldon Road shortly before 6:30 p.m. when his car crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left, said Sgt. David Henderson of the state Highway Patrol.

Greene over-corrected, and his car ran off the road to the right, hitting several mail boxes and a tree, Henderson said. The car split in two and caught fire when it hit the tree, Henderson said. Greene was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car was traveling faster than 100 mph in a 45-mph zone at the time of the crash, Henderson said. It is unclear if alcohol was involved in the wreck, he said.
