FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A 54-year-old man was killed early Friday when fire broke out in a home on Piney-Grove Rawls Road in Fuquay-Varina, according to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency crews responded to the home at about 2:30 a.m. after receiving calls from neighbors.

Authorities did not release the name of the man who died, but neighbors identified him as 54-year-old Reginald Sneed.

Neighbor Algernon Burton said he and Sneed grew up together and were best friends. Burton said when he awoke and saw the fire, he knew "it was going to be real bad."

"I came outside and began to hope and pray that he wasn't there," Burton said. "But he wouldn't be anywhere else but there.

Authorities have not released any information about the cause of the fire, but an investigation is ongoing.

"He was just a great guy and a great man. I'm going to miss him," Burton said. "We were just best friends. When you saw him, you saw me. I didn't have a little brother, but he was like my little brother."
