FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County fire investigators believe an electrical malfunction might have been to blame for a blaze that killed a man early Wednesday.

Flames tore through a single-story house at 2539 John Smith Road, near Hope Mills, around 1:45 a.m., causing heavy damage.

Someone passing by saw smoke pouring out of the home and called 911, authorities said. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had burned itself out.

The body of Danny Ray Barber, 57, was found in a bathroom.

Investigators said Barber he might have tried to get out of the house and became disoriented.

There were no other people inside the home and no reports of injuries.

Authorities were still investigating the fire Wednesday afternoon but said it was confined to a bedroom and didn't appear suspicious in nature.
