Johnston County, N.C. — One person was killed following a Thursday afternoon crash on Interstate 95 in Johnston County.
Authorities said the SUV was traveling northbound when the driver veered off the road, struck a guardrail and landed on a service road parallel to I-95 near mile marker 101.
North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the driver's seat was ripped out of the car when it struck the guardrail and the driver, identified as Muhammad Nawas, 70, of New York, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger, identified as Gail Nawaz, 72, of New York, was taken to WakeMed for treatment, authorities said.
Witnesses reported seeing the car fish-tail before sliding off the road. Authorities said the vehicle was heavily loaded, which may have contributed to the crash.
Authorities believe Muhammad Nawaz was attempting to pick something up from the floor of the car before the crash.
