SANFORD, N.C. — The vice president and co-owner of Lee Iron & Metal in Sanford was killed Monday afternoon when a large stacked bale of copper wire fell on him, police said.

Martin Alan Davis, 50, was working on a forklift near the bales of copper at about 3 p.m. When he got off the forklift, one of the bales fell on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scot Carpenter, owner of Lee Iron & Metal, released a statement Tuesday regarding Davis' death.

"Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family, friends and co-workers of Martin Davis," he said. "There is a void that will remain in our lives forever."

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration will conduct an investigation.
