ENFIELD, N.C. — A man was killed Monday evening when he tried to cross a set of railroad tracks in Halifax County and was hit by a freight train, authorities said.

The unidentified man was trying to cross the tracks on foot at West Brunette Avenue at about 5 p.m. Monday and was hit by a CSX train headed from Rocky Mount to Cumberland, Md., CSX spokesman Garrick Francis said. A southbound train had just passed the area, and the man probably didn't see the second train as he tried to cross, Francis said.
