Man killed at Cumberland County rest home during altercation

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have issued an arrest warrant after a deadly altercation at a rest home.

GODWIN, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have issued an arrest warrant after a deadly altercation at a Cumberland County rest home.

Mencie Grimes, 60, will be charged with second degree murder in the death of Levi Montgomery, 69, detectives said.

The men became involved in an argument shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday at the Countryside Villa Rest Home, 8100 Dunn Road. The altercation turned violent and Montgomery was killed, detectives said.

Grimes was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He will be officially charged upon release from the hospital, detectives said.

Montgomery’s body will be sent to the medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death.
