ERWIN, N.C. — A Harnett County man was jailed Thursday after a bizarre wreck and attempted robbery.

Law enforcement officers said Gregory Thomas Clark, 39, of Rivenbark Lane in Anderson Creek, wrecked his motorcycle, then tried to steal the vehicles of people who stopped to help him.

According to witnesses, Clark ran into a ditch along Bunnlevel-Erwin Road just west of the intersection at Titan Roberts Road on Thursday afternoon.

A Lillington woman who was driving by pulled over, and Clark yanked open the rear door and jumped into her car.

"He leaned over the back seat and was trying to mash the gas pedal with his hands," said Patrick Smith, who witnessed the scene.

Two Erwin men also pulled over to help. "He (Mr. Clark) came walking over nice as anything, just smiling, and then all of sudden reached in and grabbed my steering wheel," said Tommy Chance.

Chance said Clark held on for about 30 feet before letting go to turn his attention to a third good samaritan.

Clark reached into a car being driven by Ralph Tart, of Dunn, and tried to pull him out. "We all jumped on him and subdued him until the cops got here," witness Butch McNeill said.
