DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was indicted Monday on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting death two years ago of another man.

Police say Veshan M. Chambers shot Jimmie Lamont Harris Jr., 24, who was found lying on the steps in front of 507 Canal St. on Jan. 16, 2011.

Chambers, who is already serving time in federal prison on unrelated charges, was also indicted on one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for allegedly shooting another man at the scene.

Authorities said Chambers and Harris knew each other and that the shooting didn't appear to be random.
