CARY, N.C. — A Texas man has been charged after authorities said he ran naked down U.S. Highway 1 in Cary following a crash Friday night.

Authorities said Derwood Johnson, 36, of Fort Worth, Texas, was driving a car that rear-ended another vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. near Tryon Road

Johnston exited the vehicle and got into an altercation with responding officers, hitting a deputy in the head, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Police said the deputy was able to subdue Johnson with pepper spray, and he was taken into custody and transported to WakeMed for evaluation.

It was not immediately clear if Johnson was naked while he was driving or if he removed his clothes after the crash.

Johnson was charged with assault on a government official.

Authorities said the deputy was not injured as a result of the altercation.
