Man hit, killed by Fayetteville police cruiser identified

A Fayetteville police officer struck and killed a pedestrian with his patrol car late Saturday, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville Police Department on Tuesday identified the man who was struck and killed by a police cruiser late Saturday.

Officer Phillip Burlingame was traveling on Grove Street toward Eastern Boulevard at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when Jimmy Lee McDougald Jr. stepped in front of his patrol car, police said. McDougald, 55, of 2007 Cowan St., was struck and killed.

Burlingame has been placed on administrative duty pending the results of an internal investigation and a review of the incident by the state Highway Patrol.
