NEW HILL, N.C. — A 33-year-old man was killed during an apparent robbery inside a home at 4765 N.C. Highway 42 in New Hill early Saturday, authorities said.

A call to authorities led investigators to discover the body of Thurman Gerome Jones around 3:30 a.m., said Maj. Gary Blakenship, with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses said several people kicked open the front door, came into the home with guns and ordered everyone to the floor, Blakenship said. At one point, shots were fired and the intruders left.

Jones was found dead in one of the rooms of the house, Blakenship said.

The official cause of death hasn't been released, and the State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill will perform an autopsy.

Blakenship said Jones' death was being investigated as a homicide and that the motive was robbery. The State Bureau of Investigation was assisting in the investigation.
